Experience Curaçao Like a Local

Curaçao is a little slice of paradise nestled in the southern Caribbean, just off the coast of Venezuela. It’s part of the Dutch Caribbean and has a perfect blend of European charm and tropical vibes. You might think that such a beautiful destination comes with a hefty price tag, but the truth is, Curaçao doesn’t have to break the bank. Whether you’re looking to relax on stunning beaches, explore vibrant Willemstad, or dive into local culture, there’s something for everyone without spending a fortune!

Where to Stay

Willemstad (Punda & Otrobanda)

If you want to stay where the action is, Willemstad is your spot. Split into two main areas, Punda and Otrobanda, this vibrant city is home to colorful colonial architecture, bustling markets, and the iconic Queen Emma Bridge. Punda has a more touristy feel, with lots of restaurants, shops, and art galleries. Otrobanda, just across the water, has a more local vibe with a slightly quieter, more laid-back atmosphere. It’s perfect if you love a mix of culture, history, and modern charm, all within walking distance. I stayed a few days on both sides, and would recommend staying in Willemstad (either side) as a base while you explore the rest of the island. There’s also a small beach with crystal clear waters right in town.

Jan Thiel

For those craving a beachside escape with a touch of luxury, Jan Thiel is a top pick. Located just a short drive from Willemstad, this area boasts beautiful beaches, trendy bars, and upscale resorts. The vibe here is more upscale, but you can still stay here within budget as there is a hostel, Bed and Bike, in this neighborhood. It’s perfect if you want to be near the water, with plenty of options for snorkeling, dining, or simply enjoying a drink with a view. Plus, you’ll find everything you need—restaurants, grocery stores, and even a small nightlife scene.

Westpunt

If you prefer peace and quiet, Westpunt is the place to be. Located on the island’s northwestern tip, this neighborhood offers stunning beaches (think pristine, secluded, and perfect for snorkeling), beautiful views, and a true “escape from it all” vibe. It’s about an hour from the main city, but the serene atmosphere, crystal-clear waters, and slower pace make it a favorite for nature lovers and those looking to recharge.

Getting Around

If you’ve ever traveled through the Caribbean, you’ll know that getting around can get very expensive. Curaçao is no exception, taxis can get pretty steep on the island! Here’s how I was able to save hundreds.

Ride Share (Click)

Click is Curaçao’s new ride share app. I got to the airport for around $15 as opposed to the 40USD I was quoted by a taxi. It isn’t always available as there aren’t that many drivers (as of September 2024), but it is definitely an app you should have downloaded!

Buses

ABC is Curaçao’s public transportation network with set timetables. You can plan and track your route within the ABC Curaçao app. A ride on the routes through the city and the eastern side of the island costs ANG 2.00 (~1EUR). A ride that covers the western part of the island, Tera Kora, Lagun and Westpunt costs ANG 2.50. I took the bus to and from the beaches in Westpunt with no issues, I was able to track the bus through the app and they came on time. Compared to the 80USD quote I was given for a one-way ride to one beach in Westpunt, I’d say that’s a steal!

For the more adventurous, there are also minivans that operate on a set route, which locals call “konvooi” or “publico.” These can be an inexpensive way to travel around the island, though they tend to be more crowded and less predictable in terms of timetables. They’re best for short trips between neighborhoods but not ideal for tourists who prefer a more structured schedule.

Renting a Car

Renting a car can be one of the best ways to explore Curaçao. The island is small enough that you can cover a lot of ground on your own, just be aware that traffic can be busy in Willemstad, and parking might be tricky in popular tourist spots. Still, having a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, so it’s worth considering if you’re traveling in a group and can split the costs! Since I was traveling on my own, I opted out of renting a car and was able to navigate just fine with the above options.

Things to Do

You’ve probably already looked up some excursions through GetYourGuide or Viator, disappointed at how expensive they were. This is a trend I’ve noticed throughout the Caribbean, but with the right know-how, you can have a lot of fun on the island without breaking the bank.

Tour Willemstad

Explore the colorful capital city, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its Dutch colonial architecture and vibrant street life. The entire neighborhood is walkable. Take a picture next to the Curaçao sign then grab a soursop ice cream right across the street. On Friday nights the town comes alive with live music and vendors, with fireworks to kick off the festivities. There’s even a small town beach with crystal clear waters behind the Curacao sign in Punda, Playa Marichi.

Kura Hulanda Village

A cultural complex in Otrobanda, offering a unique blend of colorful restored historic buildings, art galleries, restaurants, and the Kura Hulanda Museum, all set amidst lush courtyards and cobblestone streets.

Snorkel with turtles at Playa Piskado

Snorkel with turtles at this tiny beach on the tip of the island in Westpunt. Snorkel rentals are 9EUR.

Try local food

From the old market in Willemstad to the fresh fish at Playa Piskado, be sure to check out my guide to Curaçao local eats.

Relax at Grote Knip

Relax at two of Curaçao’s most famous beaches, Grote Knip and Kleine Knip—known for their clear waters and serene atmosphere. They’re about 20 minutes walking distance from each other.

Explore Mambo Beach

Mambo Beach is a collection of hotels, restaurants, beach clubs, and shops all surrounded by a calm private beach. You can easily spend all day here—swim, snorkel, dine, shop, and party—there’s something for just about everyone. Each beach club has its own section of beach that is privatized, you can find individual pricing on their website.

There’s an app for that 😉

For all the happenings around the island, you can check out the Cura app. This app compiles all Curaçao’s attractions and gems.
